Street Performance

by The Acoustic Heroes.

They don't have real instruments so they use Guitar Hero guitars and drums, and they don't really know the words so they repeat the chorus.

This performance is from Rotschild boulevard.

Walk On The Ocean

by Toad the Wet Sprocket.

we spotted the ocean at the head of the trail
where are we going, so far away
and somebody told me that this is the place
where everything's better, everything's safe

walk on the ocean
step on the stones
flesh becomes water
wood becomes bone

half and hour later we packed up our things
we said we'd send letters and all those little things
and they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same
it seemed they'd already forgotten we'd came

walk on the ocean
step on the stones
flesh becomes water
wood becomes bone

now back at the homestead
where the air makes you choke
and people don't know you
and trust is a joke
we don't even have pictures
just memories to hold
that grow sweeter each season
as we slowly grow old

Angel

by Sarah McLachlan.

I heard this song on the radio on my way to the airport, the day I left New York after my month long visit there. I couldn't relate to it more that day.

The original version's quality is a bit better.

Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always some reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day

I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty
Oh and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear

You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting
Keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack

It don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness
Oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear

You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

Service Not Included ("Lo Kolel Sherut")

by Tel Aviv Youngsters ("Tseirey Tel Aviv").

"Lo Kolel Sherut", an ancient TV show, was broadcast between 1990-1993. It was about a cafe in Tel Aviv that is run by a group of youngsters, played by the members of the city-owned band "Tseirey Tel Aviv". From time to time the band would sing a cover of Israeli or international hit song.

The show aired on the state owned public channel, then the only channel in Israeli television.

Back then everyone watched that show. I personally loved the girls... and I was especially in love with Shir Gotlib. I always thought she, or more true her character, was the smartest one :)

And although she wasn't the biggest star on the show, I think she was the most beautiful one:

So, here are a few of their international covers:

Just like a prayer, which its Hebrew translation made its broadcast in Israel's state-owned channel so provocative back then.

Dream a little dream of me, by the beautiful Shir Gotlib. How can you not fall in love I don't know.

I Don't Want To Talk About It

Tomorrow, from "Angie" soundtrack

And lastly, We are the world. This is a live performance in Tel Aviv with special surprise guests - from "Beverly Hills 90210" actor Ian Ziering, and from "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" actor Corin Nemec (who looks pretty lost). The early 90's never looked better. Check out the video editing, the outfits, and especially the cool cameras the kids in the crowd have...

Brand New Start

by Paul Weller.

I'm gonna clear out my head
I'm gonna get myself straight
I know it's never too late to make a brand new start

I'm gonna kick down the door
I'm gonna get myself in
I'm gonna fix up the yard
And not fall back again

I'm gonna clean up my earth and build a heaven on the ground
Not something distant or unfound but something real to me
But something real to me

All that I can I can be
All that I am I can see
All that is mine is in my hands
So to myself I call

There's somewhere else I should be
There's someone else I can see
There's something more I can find
It's only up to me

I'm gonna clean up my earth and build a heaven on the ground
Not something distant on a cloud but something real to me
But something real to me

I'm gonna clear out my head
I'm gonna get myself straight
I know it's never too late to make a brand new start

Thanks Aleterman

So long, Marianne

by Leonard Cohen.

I already wrote before, Leonard Cohen's songs always seems to me as they were written from within my head.

Lately I feel like I am not really sure where I am and where am I going. A lot of feelings and emotions mix up together and I feel a bit lost. But as the time pass, I feel like I understand more and I feel much stronger. And when I'm listening to Leonard Cohen I actually feel, in some of the songs, like this is exactly what his lyrics are about.

In addition, Leonard's songs, and even just his voice, connects so strongly for me to New York, where I'm now, 2 years after I left it and made a huge switch in my life.

On top of it all, Leonard Cohen just performed in Israel few days ago while was here in New York, and he is coming to perform in New York 10 days after I'm back in Israel.

And this particular song just touches all those issues I'm dealing with.

Come over to the window, my little darling,
I'd like to try to read your palm.
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
before I let you take me home.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

Well you know that I love to live with you,
but you make me forget so very much.
I forget to pray for the angels
and then the angels forget to pray for us.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

We met when we were almost young
deep in the green lilac park.
You held on to me like I was a crucifix,
as we went kneeling through the dark.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

Your letters they all say that you're beside me now.
Then why do I feel alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
is fastening my ankle to a stone.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

For now I need your hidden love.
I'm cold as a new razor blade.
You left when I told you I was curious,
I never said that I was brave.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

Oh, you are really such a pretty one.
I see you've gone and changed your name again.
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside,
to wash my eyelids in the rain!

Bird On a Wire

by Ester Ofarim.

What an amazing performance of this amazing Leonard Cohen song.

Shana tova!

[Via Marmelada]

Like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
Like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
If i, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If i, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.

Like a baby, stillborn,
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
And by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He said to me, you must not ask for so much.
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
She cried to me, hey, why not ask for more?

Oh like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Les Yeux Ouverts

by Enzo Enzo.

I first heard this French version of the song sang by Judy Bachar in a good commercial for Superpharm (which was shot in the site of the under-construction HaBima Theatre, 10 seconds from my apartment).

I never knew this song had a French version, and I really like it. This version by Enzo Enzo is especially good I think. Does anything sounds better in French?

You may also want to check out Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong version of this song.

Birthday

by Berry Sakharof and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (led by the conductor Zubin Mehta).

The opening song of the opening ceremony to Tel Aviv's 100 year birthday. I waited for the official video of the show to get to youtube, but then I found this video which I like much more...

The show, which was in Rabin's Square right at the end of my street, was awesome. The celebrations it started are year long and I am so happy to live here at this time. If you are not in Tel Aviv this year you should still check if there are celebrations in your country, such as the creation of one of Tel Aviv's beaches in major cities around the world.

This video must be watched with "HQ" on!

My Darling?

One video from the series Tales Of Mere Existence.

I saw this movie and felt really weird for identifying with this guy. Sometimes I have most of the thoughts this guy have before I first talk to people. a girl I like.

I Dreamed a Dream - Les Miserables

by Susan Boyle.

It's probably already all over the internet but how can I not post it too?

This is the only version of the song that youtube allows to embed in other sites, so you should really watch it by clicking on this link.

It reminds me a lot of "Britain's got Talent" first season contestant Paul Potts's audition. Paul ended up winning the first season.

UPDATE - It didn't take much before youtube disabled this video as well, so now you must click the link to see the video...

Alone Again (Naturally) \ VeShoov Levad

I love this song, on both versions. I think the Hebrew version is a bit more funny and sarcastic though which makes me love it more..

Young Girl \ Layla

by Gary Puckett And The Union Gap\No'ar Shula'im.

First English\Hebrew dual song post in the series.

In this song the Hebrew version missed the "being too young" issue from being the focus of the song, but overall I think it is a bit better.

Last Request

by Paolo Nutini.

It's been a long time since I got the recommendation to listen to Paolo Nutini from one of my best friends on earth. We are very far now but I still know we are close. Hope that makes any sense to you.

I listened to it and indeed I liked it. I'm not surprised you knew I would.

After Last Request I've put New Shoes, which is a totally different kind of song but is also "not too bad".

If It Kills Me

by Jason Mraz.

There are only live performances videos of this song on youtube, so the sound quality is not the best. But still this song is great.

When I was trying to choose the best video to put I found it funny to see how Jason almost always starts this song with this "who came to this show with their best friend" act. At first look it seemed like it was just something spontaneous.

I found a video of the song where things got a little bit differently and Jason got a bit confused with that act. And I think the sounds quality there is better. So here it is. The second video is presented here just so you will also get a chance to see how he usually opens this song.

Hello
Tell me you know, yeah you’ve figured me out
Something gave it away
And it would be such a beautiful moment to see the look on your face
To know that I know that you know now
And baby that’s a case of my wishful thinking
You know nothing
Cause you and I, why we go carrying on for hours on end
We get along much better than you and your boyfriend
Well all I really wanna do is love you
A kind much closer than friends use
But I still can’t say it after all we’ve been through
And all I really want from you is to feel me
As the feeling inside keeps building
And I will find a way to you if it kills me
If it kills me

How long can I go on like this?
Wishing to kiss you before I rightly explode?
And this double life I lead isn’t healthy for me
In fact it makes me nervous
If I get caught I could be risking it all

Baby there’s a lot that I’ll miss in case I’m wrong
All I really wanna do is love you
A kind much closer than friends use
But I still can’t say it after all we’ve been through
And all I really want from you is to feel me
As the feeling inside keeps building
And I will find a way to you if it kills me
If it kills me

If I should be so bold
I’d ask you to hold my heart in your hand
Tell you from the start how I’ve longed to be your man
But I never said I would
I guess I’ve gone and missed my chance again

Well all I really wanna do is love you
A kind much closer than friends use
But I still can’t say it after all we’ve been through
And all I really want from you is to feel me
It’s a feeling inside keeps building
And I will find a way to you if it kills me
If it kills me
If it kills me
I think it might kill me

Parachute

by Sean Lennon.

Love is like an aero plane
You jump and then you pray
The lucky ones remain
In the clouds for days
If life is just a stage
Let's put on the best show
And let everyone know

Cause if I have to die tonight
I'd rather be with you
Cut the parachute before the dive
Baby don't you cry
You have to bring me down
We had some fun before we hit the ground

Love is like a hurricane
You know it's on the way
You think you can be brave
Underneath the waves
If life is just a dream
Which of us is dreaming
And who will wake up screaming

Cause if I have to die tonight
I'd rather be with you
Cut the parachute before the dive
Baby don't you cry
You have to bring me down
We had some fun before we hit the ground

Cause if I have to die tonight
I'd rather it was you
Cut the parachute before the dive
Baby don't you cry
You have to bring me down
We had some fun before we hit the ground

Halston Fall 2009

by Colonel Blimp.

Halston released this video clip instead of producing a runway to show off their 2009 collection.

I think the video clip is cool, and it surely touched my Oh-I-Miss-New-York sensitive points, but again, I love the song the more. From what I understand it was composed especially for Halston and this video clip by Benjamin Bronfman and that it is called You’re The One. Will keep on looking for information about this song.

Ilha Da Loucura

by Jorge Fernando.

I have just returned from a short and amazing vacation in Lisbon, Portugal.
Even though it is not the best season (it almost didn't stop raining), and even though I was there for just 4 days, I noticed that this city has something unique in it. Some sort of classic style that makes you feel very calm and comfortable there. I had a really good time. I will upload the pictures soon.

At the first night me and my friend went to a Fado pub. Unlike most of the touristic Fado clubs, this was a local one which means very very small and crowded, no English speaking service or even customers and really good Fado singers. Also this place is open only two nights in the week.

We got in pretty late and heard the last two singers of that night. Before the last singer the owner stood up to introduce her. Of course he spoke in Portuguese and I didn't understand a word, but from the way he spoke I thought\imagined that he is saying that the next singer is very unique.
Then a beautiful girl stood up and started singing. I lost all my thoughts and couldn't focus on anything. Her singing was very touching and exciting (and did I mention she was beautiful?)

The song Ilha Da Loucura was the first song she sang and it was the most amazing performance I saw in a long time. I did my best to explain to one of the waitresses that I want to know the name of the song and she went to singer and asked her. The version I put here is the only one I found on the internet. It is not nearly as good as the one that I heard in the pub, but I think the song itself is very good and I hope you will like it too.

The Portuguese lyrics are below.

UPDATE - it seems like the song doesn't go through RSS readers. If you are reading this from one, go to the actual post to hear the song.

Cheguei á estranha ilha da loucura
Onde a paixão violenta me tocou
Errava então minh’alma á procura
Quando encontrou a tua e sossegou

Depois foram as mãos que se tocaram
Trementes, acudidas de emoção
Os olhos nunca mais se nos calaram
Contando as emoções do coração

Meu amor, meu amor
Aceita as emoções do coração

A voz era um murmúrio na garganta
Qual pássaro aturdido a esvoaçar
A sede da minh’alma fora tanta
Que só na tua se pôde saciar

Então, meus pés descalços sobre a ilha
Partiram sem partir, a desvendar
O mar beijando a areia, fez-te filha
E a ilha meu amor, reinou no mar

One Year

by me.

Few days ago I made some changes to my traffic statistic service and it stopped counting the hits on this blog. I had to start a new count from zero.
I thought to myself that this can be a chance to write about the statistics so far and after I checked the dates I noticed that the service stopped symbolically exactly one year after it started. I really didn't remember it's been a year already...

Isn't that a real sign?

The count is from January 17 2008 to January 16 2009. The blog started at January 12th but statistics started only on the 16th. At that point there were 5 posts already as at the beginning I really did posted a song a day as planned...

So here it goes:

133 Posts

1,300 Visits (exactly!)

908 Unique visitors

2,349 Pageviews

2 Minutes and 17 seconds average time spent by a visitor

59 Countries (top 10 are: Israel, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Netherlands, France, Australia, Denmark and Thailand)

71 Referral websites (which where the source of more than 50% of the visits)

464 Visits from search results of 368 different keywords

The most successful keyword is "erika kessel" which sent 11 visitors :) (Thanks ek)

The next 3 successful keywords are different spell outs of the sentence "are you lonesome tonight laughing version"

Top 4 posts:
1. Are You Lonesome Tonight (the laughing version)
2. official black google
3. Classic moments - Lego style
4. we are not athletes

Most visitors in one day: March 29, 2008 - 106 visitors (which went mostly to the official black google post).

Hopes for next year: Much more good songs and posts, much more comments (that's your job!) and more visitors.

I am sometimes sorry that I posted such great songs at the begining of this blog when I had no readers at all (except one actually). So I will take advantage of the one year celebrations and the recounting of the traffic statistics, and will symbolically re-post the first song I posted on this blog - American Breakfast by Supertramp.

Hamas

I would never think I will post something about the fight in Gaza in my so not political blog, but at the end I gave in.

Between the so many videos I saw about this subject, I picked this video not because it is the best in showing how right is Israel's side or how wrong is the picture that the Palestinians are trying (and succeeding) to show to the world, but because that from all the bad things that a war in general in this in particular brings, this is for me the worst.

I get really sad and really pessimist when I see these pictures (and trust me there are much worse pictures of this behavior, this is just the only English speaking video I found on the subject).
I get the feeling there is no way we can ever have any kind of peace or serenity when we are facing this kind of people with such no humanity or value for life. Not even for their own children and babies.

UPDATE - I guess putting one video made it much easier to give in and put another. I added one more video which I felt I had to. I know it is dramatically edited but nevertheless it is all true. We want peace (to both sides), we want no civilians to be hurt (on both sides) while Hamas is aiming directly to civilian populations from within civilian populations (even when there are so many army populations now around the Gaza strip...). I hope this whole thing will end quickly and in a good way to both sides, as I hope this will be my last political video in this blog.
