Leather

by Tori Amos.

We share the same name. Could that be the reason I love some of her songs so much?

This song is one of my favorites. Here it's performed live in 1997, five years after it was released in Amos's debut solo album "Little Earthquakes". If you prefer the original version, or if you never heard it before, go and listen to it here. Below the videos you can find the lyrics.

As a bonus - "Crucify", probably Amos's most popular song, also from the debut album "Little Earthquakes" (and BTW - that album has more great songs. You should listen to it all). If you like this song too, you should also check out this version.

Look I'm standing naked before you,
Don't you want more than my sex?
I can scream as loud as your last one
But I can't claim innocence

Oh God could it be the weather
Oh God why am I here?
If love isn't forever
And its not the weather
Hand me my leather

I could just pretend that you love me,
The night would lose all sense of fear
But why do I need you to love me
When you cant hold what I hold dear?

Oh God could it be the weather,
Oh God why am I here?
If love isn't forever
And its not the weather
Hand me my leather

I almost ran over an angel,
He had a nice big fat cigar
in a sense he said you're alone here
So if you jump you best jump far

Oh God could it be the weather
Oh God why am I here?
If love isn't forever
And its not the weather

Oh God could it be the weather
Oh God it's all very clear
If love isn't forever
And its not the weather
Hand me my leather

She Drives Me Crazy

by Fine Young Cannibals.

This video clip is SO GREAT.

And as a bonus - FYC cover of Elvis's "Suspicious Minds" (which was the king's last number-one single in the United States).

It's all about the 80's.

Google Talk me

Since this blog readers haven't started commenting much yet (or at all), I decided to add the cool Google Talk Chatback to my site, which allows you to IM me right from the blog (if I'm online), with just one click and even without a google account.

If you are reading this on an rss reader, I urge you to go to the blog at least once to see how cool it is. I will put one badge here on the post - it might work on your reader as well and save you the visit to my site.

Now, if you are too lazy to comment, just click the link and tell me your comment. Of course I will then persuade you to write it as a comment anyhow.

So, now more then ever, let me know what you think!

"Once"

First let me tell you I re-edited yesterday's post (starting of course with changing "Faith" to "Fate"). I'm sorry but I was too upset and some mistakes slipped through.

And after yesterday I posted the Oscar winning song from the movie "Once", today I went to see it.

"Once" displays life as it should be lived. It is so naturalistic. It displays reality as I see it. It made me feel so good to realize I am not the only one who think the way I think and act the way I act.

And the soundtrack (all of which but one song composed and performed by the movie actors themselves) is amazing. Check out the official site to listen to all the songs (along with videos and photos). I think I will post few of those songs here in the close future.

For me, watching this movie was the right thing to do. And it was definitely the perfect time to do it. I got out of the movie filled with optimism and strength (although I am sure the movie's end will not make everyone feel the same. I just think I saw a bit beyond it).

The only thing that disturbs me is the name of the movie. During the movie we don't get an explanation for choosing the name "once". I really hope the writer didn't try to say that these kind of stories can only happen once in a lifetime because I know to me it already happened. But actually it happened to me more than once already, so I guess there is no need to worry.

If this movie shows somewhere around you, GO SEE IT. If not, RENT IT.

And here is the trailer, in case you didn't see it already. Promise me you won't settle for the it and go watch the movie.

Fate

I believe in fate.
Not in the simple "it doesn't matter what you do, it's all determined by fate" kind of way - I believe that if you are good to the world, the world will be good to you.

2 Months ago someone broke into my apartment in Tel Aviv. Of everything me and my roommate have in our place (and we have a lot), the robber "only" took my laptop, and my 2000$ in cash I had in my closet drawer (I am now an expert and can tell you that if you have any cash in your home - put it somewhere in your kitchen).

2 Days later I got a call from the foreign ministry in Jerusalem saying that they just changed their tax procedures for all their world-wide consulates. I was informed I am retroactively entitled for tax refund... of 2000$.

These kind of things happened to me all my life.

3 Years ago I followed my heart half the globe from India to Utah. I was in the middle of my 9 months life long planned journey in India as I canceled everything to go tell a girl I met few months before that I love her. I also decided not to tell her I am coming and just knock on her door and surprise her.

Although I didn't know what to expect, I didn't expect she will ask me to leave after 4 days.

Then, when I went to New York to get on a flight back to Israel, I was contacted by a friend at the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan asking if I am still in India. She said that if not, they want me to come and be their webmaster.

I had to agree. It was as if fate was shouting to me "you did the right thing coming here". 3 Months later I met the most beautiful girl on earth in a books booth at a Christmas fair. I fell in love as never before.

Fate.

Today I was very sad. As I was staring at the laptop screen, tears in my eyes, I felt I have to find a way to check what my fate is trying to tell me.

I went to wikipedia, and clicked on the "Random Article" button.
This is what came up.
Things will get better. I just need to keep be good to the world.

And wait a month.

"Falling Slowly" (by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova), the freshly Oscar winning song from the movie "Once", fits perfectly at this moment. This version is the cute original video clip, and the the lyrics are below it. The strong Oscar night performance can be seen here.

UPDATE: The next day I went to see "Once". Here is what I think of it.

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along

Road To Nowhere

by Talking Heads.

My semester break is over today and tomorrow is my first day of spring semester.
As a tribute to that, here is the "Road To Nowhere".

The (crazy) lyrics after the video.

WELL WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOIN'
BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'VE BEEN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE KNOWIN'
BUT WE CAN'T SAY WHAT WE'VE SEEN
AND WE'RE NOT LITTLE CHILDREN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT
AND THE FUTURE IS CERTAIN
GIVE US TIME TO WORK IT OUT

We're on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride

I'm feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know,
We're on the road to paradise
Here we go, here we go

CHORUS

Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there

We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere

There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

We're on a road to nowhere

Empty Chairs + And I Love You So

by Don McLean.

Another mind reading artist.
McLean's most famous composition, "American Pie", will get its own post sometime in the future.

"Empty Chairs" was the inspiration and subject of another great song which I promise to write about in the near future. Know which song it is? you are welcomed to write it in the comments.

"And I Love You So", one of my favorite songs, is presented here in one of its best versions. It is from Don McLean's live show in Cesarea, Israel in 1979.

One of my most favorite posts so far.

I saw this little guy on Rothschild Boulevard the other day.

Famous Blue Raincoat + Last Year's Man + Chelsea Hotel#2

by Leonard Cohen.

It is as if Leonard Cohen got into my mind and wrote what was there (although I agree that "Last Year's Man" is a bit too much). Just play them one after the other and enjoy.

Let me know which one is your favorite.

Cat's in the Cradle

by Harry Chapin and by Ugly Kid Joe.

Another song with so many covers. I first heard this song performed by Ugly Kid Joe, and for a long time I thought that was the best version of it. And then I heard the original.

So, as somewhat usual, you can pick your favorite. And let me know.

Don't Look Back In Anger

by Oasis.

and as a bonus, another great song by Oasis, "Champagne Supernova".
It's an Oasis fiesta today.

From the lyrics: "Stand up beside the fireplace / Take that look from off your face" - Peggy Gallagher's (the songwriter's mother) instructions to Noel (the songwriter) when he would have his photograph taken next to the fireplace when he was a child.

This performance is from the MTV Unplugged series. Oasis show was almost canceled when brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher got into an argument in which Liam (Oasis's lead singer) proclaimed Oasis were nothing without him, and wished to prove this by letting Noel (Oasis Main songwriter and guitarist) and the remaining three members perform without him. Noel then took over for vocals and sang for every song during the concert (which didn't affect much on this song because this is usually performed by Noel anyway).

The song has become a favorite at Oasis' live performances. Check out this live performance in Manchester, and if at this point you haven't had enough of "Don't Look Back In Anger", check out the official US video.

One

by Johnny Cash.

To all of my readers: Sorry for not posting any song in the last 2 days.
As a compensation, the next few days will have really really great songs.

This is a cover to one of U2's greatest hits, and one of the best songs of the 90's. It is part of Johnny Cash's "American series" - 5 albums filled with covers to songs Cash liked most.

Two interesting trivia details about this series are: 1. Each album in the series won at least one Grammy award, and 2. The 5th album in the series was released after Cash's death on September 2003 (4 months after the death of his wife June Carter), and the 6th is about to be released soon.

This song is from the album "American III: Solitary Man".

First Day of My Life

by Bright Eyes.

Happy late Valentine's day.

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you had just woke up
And you said "this is the first day of my life
"I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
"Now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
"And I’d probably be happy"

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We'll just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Then waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time it's different
I mean I really think you'll like me

The Bubble Project

My first non-song post, If you got here through the "Random song" button - sorry, click again..

At first, when I sometimes saw those little bubble stickers on ads in the subway, I didn't care much for "The Bubble Project". But once I had the chance to see a lot of them together, organized by categories, I started to like this idea.

Autumn Leaves

by Coldcut.

My dad loves this song. It's his favorite tune to play on the guitar. I sometimes even catch him sing it while listening to it on the phone when someone puts him on hold (apparently it is one of the favorite "listen while you wait" songs in telephone switchboards).

This song has a long history and so many covers. Coldcut's version the my favorite (though I hate the videoclip).

UPDATE - Youtube erased the video I had here so I updated this post with a new video.

Come On Eileen

by Dexys Midnight Runners.

One thing about the video (from wikipedia):

"Drummer Seb Shelton was reputedly fired from the band during the filming of the music video. Rowland had ordered his bandmates not to do any bathing or shaving of any kind, in order to achieve a more gruff appearance. Shelton did not follow the orders, and was subsequently kicked out of the band. This is also the reason of Shelton's absence near the end of the video."

Thom Yorke (Radiohead's lead singer): "Karma Police is dedicated to everyone who works for a big firm. It's a song against bosses".

Happy Together

by The Turtles.

A nice fact from songfacts: "This song is about unrequited love. Our desperate singer wants the girl to "Imagine how the world could be so very fine", proposing what would happen "If I should call you up." The line in the fadeout, "How is the weather?" refers to the real level of their relationship being nothing more but passing acquaintances with small talk."

This song just says it all.

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night
It's only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight
So happy together

If I should call you up
Invest a dime
And you say you belong to me
And ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be
So very fine
So happy together

I can't see me loving nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me
Baby the skies will be blue
For all my life

Me and you
And you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together

I can't see me loving nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me
Baby the skies will be blue
For all my life

Me and you
And you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together

Me and you
And you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together

Russians

by Sting.

This song is from Sting's debut album "Dream Of The Blue Turtles" which was released in 1985. The lyrics are so direct (see after the video). Check out few facts here.

And in case you haven't notice, there is a new "Play a random song" button on the right bar of the blog (Under the "I Feel Lucky" title). Cool eh?

In Europe and America,
There's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy
From Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us me and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

Across the Universe

by The Beatles.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the day The Beatles recorded the song (and few other anniversarys), NASA will beam this song to deep space, towards the North Star, Polaris.

And in celebration of this, here it is. Right after it is the trailer for the movie\musical "Across the Universe" which I saw twice and reccomend you to do the same.

New Soul

by Yael Naim.

This song, featured in the new MacBook Air commercial (see below), is by an Israeli singer living in France. And I love it a lot.

She has more great songs. Check them out on http://www.yaelweb.com and http://www.myspace.com/yaelnaim.
