Are You Lonesome Tonight (the laughing version)

by Elvis Presley.

Always makes me happy.

According to wikipedia, occasionally during live performances Elvis would randomly change lyrics to give them humorous connotations. In this version, recorded at the International Hotel in Vegas on August 26, 1969, instead of singing: "Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there", he sings "Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair" (0:42 in the video). Apparently at that point he saw a bald man in the audience.

From that point on Elvis can't stop laughing. Pure and honest laughter.

As a bonus check out the second video, showing Elvis singing the same song - only this time instead of changing the lyrics to something funny, he just babbles. This performance is from 1977.

official black google

As an attempt to fight global warming, and as part of "Earth Hour" in Tel Aviv, Google Israel (google.co.il) has darkened it's official home page.

Ironically, on it's official blog, Google actually explains us why making it's home page black might be bad for our environment.

hhhhhm.

And an interesting fact - Because of it's Shabbat (Saturday) issues, unlike the rest of the world, Israel's "Earth Hour" have been brought forward 2 days.

Under the Bridge

by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is the city I live in, the city of angels
Lonely as I am, together we cry

I drive on her streets cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
I never worry, now that is a lie.

Well, I don't ever want to feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way
I don't ever want to feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way

It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe that I'm all alone
At least I have her love, the city she loves me
Lonely as I am, together we cry

Well, I don't ever want to feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way
Well, I don't ever want to feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way

oh no, no, no, yeah, yeah
love me, i say, yeah yeah
one time

(under the bridge downtown)
is where I drew some blood
(under the bridge downtown)
i could not get enough
(under the bridge downtown)
forgot about my love
(under the bridge downtown)
i gave my life away yeah, yeah yeah
no, no, no, yeah, yeah
no, no, i say, yeah, yeah

here i stay

I Don't Feel Like Dancin'

by Scissor Sisters.

This song was written with Elton John, who also plays the piano for it.

Songfacts.com claims it is a deliberate rebuke to the Bee Gees "You Should Be Dancing" (2nd video on this post), while Wikipedia compares it to Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (3rd video on this post), both became hits when released in 1976.

UPDATE - Youtube keeps blocking this videoclip. So I've put a non-video version of it, and if you want to see the cool videoclip, click here.

Only You

by Yazoo and by The Flying Pickets.

Written in 1982 by Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke as a goodbye gift to the band. Depeche Mode didn't take it and so he went on to record it after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyetit.

The first video is the popular cover version which was released in 1983 by the a cappella vocal group The Flying Pickets, which beat the original version on the charts.

The second video is an official remix of the song (made by Yazoo) which was released in 1999 and brought the 17 years old song back to the charts.

If you want to hear\see the original song, click here for the (funny) video clip (not the highest sound quality) or here (better audio quality but no video clip). You can read the lyrics after the videos.

This is for Julia. I think I saw you on the street today.

Looking from a window above
It's like a story of love
Can you hear me
Came back only yesterday
I'm moving further away
Want you near me

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you

Sometimes when I think of her name
When it's only a game
And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
It's getting harder to stay
When I see you

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you

This is going to take a long time
And I wonder what's mine
Can't take no more
Wonder if you'll understand
It's just the touch of your hand
Behind a closed door

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you

Lay Your Head Down + Chelsea Burns

by Keren Ann.

I went to see Keren Ann's performance last night in Tel Aviv and I enjoyed SO much.
The girl has an angel voice.

Youtube is filled with Keren's songs, one of them I used before, so I just picked two more for you to listen to before you'll go yourself to hear the rest.

Enjoy!

In A Broken Dream

by Python Lee Jackson featuring Rod Stewart.

I can hear this song over and over again.

Don't miss the awesome lyrics ("Good people are in bed before nine o'clock") after the video.

UPDATE - YouTube removed the original song. Here is a version of the song by Stewart with David Gilmour and John Paul Jones, which is very good too.

Every day I spend my time
Drinkin' wine, feelin' fine
Waitin' here to find the sign
That I can understand
Yes I am.

In the days between the hours
Ivory towers, bloody flowers
Push their heads in to the air
I don't care if I ever know
There I go

Don't push your love too far
Your wounds won't leave a scar
Right now is where you are
In a broken dream
Did someone bow their head ?
Did someone break the bread ?
Good people are in bed
Before nine o'clock.

On the pad before my eyes
Paper cries, tellin' lies
The promises you gave
From the grave of a broken heart

Every day I spend my time
Drinkin' wine, feelin' fine
Waitin' here to find the sign
That I can understand
Yes I am.

I sit here in my lonely room

Don't push your love too far
You know your wounds won't even leave a scar
Right now is where you are
In a broken dream

And don't you forget what I say

Nights in White Satin

by The Moody Blues.

Facts:
- This song is part of an album named "Days of Future Passed". It is a concept album tracing an "everyman's day" from dawn to night, from awakening to sleep. This song was last song on the album and represented nighttime.

- The song wasn't a popular title when first released because it was too long (7:38) and didn't get much air time on the radio. Only in 1972, after songs like "Hey Jude " (7:05) and "Layla" (7:02) became popular, the song was re-released and became a hit.

- The song was written by the band's lead singer Justin Hayward at the age of 19.
The spoken-word poem, "Late Lament", which can be heard at the 5:52 mark in the song, was written by the band's drummer Graeme Edge, and was read by the keyboardist, Mike Pinder.

- My favorite line: "Just what you want to be you will be in the end".
What is your favorite line? (lyrics after the video).

This is the original, full version of the song. Enjoy.

Nights in white satin never reaching the end
Letters I've written never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed with these eyes before
Just what the truth is I can't say any more
'Cause I love you yes I love you oh how I love you

Gazing at people some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through they can't understand
Some try to tell me thoughts they can not defend
Just what you want to be you will be in the end
And I love you yes I love you oh how I love you
Oh how I love you

Nights in white satin never reaching the end
Letters I've written never meaning to send
Beauty I've always missed with these eyes before
Just what the truth is I can't say any more
'Cause I love you yes I love you oh how I love you oh how ooh
'Cause I love you yes I love you oh how I love you oh how ooh

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy is spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

Hallelujah

by John Cale.

I first heard this cover for Leonard Cohen's song on the radio few days ago.
Among all of "Hallelujah" versions, it is one of my favorites.

Daydream Believer

by The Monkees.

Cheer up sleepy Jean :)

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings.
The six o'clock alarm would never ring.
Whoops it's ringing and I rise,
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
My shavin' razor's cold and it stings.

Cheer up, sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed.
Now you know how happy I can be.
Oh, and our good times start and end
Without dollar one to spend.
But how much, baby, do we really need.

Cheer up, sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.
Cheer up, sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

Cheer up, sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

No Milk Today

by Herman's Hermits.

Another song in the "British Invasion" series of posts (As you probably noticed, I'm a big fan of this music).

This 1966 song wasn't Herman's Hermits biggest hit in the UK or the US, but here in Israel I can still hear it at least once a week on the radio. Read the cute lyrics after the video.

No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No milk today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don't know the reason why

How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know the palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen

No milk today, it wasn't always so
The company was gay, we'd turn night into day

But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up two down

No milk today, it wasn't always so
The company was gay, we'd turn night into day
As music played the faster did we dance
We felt it both at once, the start of our romance

How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen

No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn

But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up two down

No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No milk today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don't know the reason why

How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen

No milk today, it wasn't always so
The company was gay, we'd turn night into day

But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Oh all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Oh all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town

Julia

by The Beatles.

The last track on disc one of "The White Album".
Read the lyrics after the video.

Is this the best love song ever written?

Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you, Julia

Julia, Julia, ocean-child calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

Her hair of floating sky is shimmering, glimmering
In the sun

Julia, Julia, morning moon, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind, Julia

Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Hum hum hum hum... calls me
So I sing a song of love for Julia, Julia, Julia

Our House

one by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young and one by Madness.

Two different songs (and very different music styles) with the same name.

The first, released in 1970, refers to writer and singer Graham Nash's brief affair with Joni Mitchell.

The second, released 12 years later, was Madness's biggest hit in the United States (they only had 2 hits in the US, this song and "It Must Be Love").

I can't seem to make up my mind which song I like better.
Do you have a favorite?

Hedonism

by Skunk Anansie.

I hope you're feeling happy now
I see you feel no pain at all it seems
I wonder what you're doin' now
I wonder if you think of me at all
Do you still play the same moves now
Or are those special moods
For someone else
I hope you're feeling happy now

Just because you feel good
Doesn't make you right, oh no
Just because you feel good
Still want you here tonight

Does laughter still discover you
I see through all the smiles
That look so right
Do you still have the same friends now
To smoke away your problems and your life
Oh how do you remember Me
The one that made you laugh until you cried
I hope you're feeling happy now

Just because you feel good
Doesn't make you right, oh no
Just because you feel good
Still want you here tonight

I wonder what you're doing now
I hope you're feeling happy now
I hope you're feeling happy now
